This workshop takes the unexposed 16mm filmstrip as a site for image making using light, objects, the hand, and shadow play. The egocentric rays in this case are emitters of light such as torches, candles, laser pens, cigarette lighters and bike lights. Light from these falls onto small opaque objects, the shape and shadow of which are left embedded in the film strip.

Beginning with a contextual overview of the nature, history, and art of making a photogram, the workshop includes mixing powder developer D97, and the practicalities of working in the darkroom at no.w.here under red safe lights to produce short lengths of black and white photogrammed 16mm.

Along the way we will explore the potentials of creating optical sound by hand, and how hand printing processes might be used to make experimental prints from both positive and negative films.

The workshop ends with a loop screening of all the short strips made on the workshop, which participants are able to take away with them. This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners in working with film as well as established practitioners wanting to explore and expand techniques in their practice.

You are welcome to bring both tiny opaque objects to experiment with, as well as short lengths of 16mm film, although both are provided. Please note due to the experimental nature of the workshop and working space at no.w.here this should not be footage you are too precious about using.
