no.w.here presents a workshop which focuses on optical sound and celluloid film as a medium for the creation of experimental audio. The session will focus on the photogram in the construction of image making, starting at the beginning of photochemistry, and using examples of artists’ film work that make use of artificially created optical sound alongside image, or where the image creates the soundtrack. Participants will have the opportunity to physically engage with notated sound sources such as musical scores, sheet music etc, using these in the darkroom to make photograms onto 16mm film.

Sonic Illuminations is a day exploring sound and moving image at BFI Southbank, aimed at practitioners and anyone interested in film and music. The day will include workshops, panel discussions, live events and screenings by featuring contributions from Dominic Murcott and the Trinity College of Music Contemporary Music Ensemble, no.w.here, Robin Rimbaud (aka Scanner), Jon Wozencroft, Jayne Parker & Anton Lukoszevieze, and Conor Kelly and David Ryan. The final event of the day features Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger introducing his film ‘The Lark Ascending’ with BFI Southbank Artistic Director Eddie Berg.

Sonic Illuminations is a collaboration between spnm – promoting new music, BFI Southbank, Anthony Reynolds Gallery, Chelsea College of Art, no.w.here and Trinity College of Music.
