OKAY OKAY. The Modern Dance, produced at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin (dffb), travels through a manmade world void of people: waste sites, parking garages, industrial chimneys, and rundown housing blocks. The timeless selection of songs by Pere Ubu, The Residents, Wire, Throbbing Gristle, Ultravox, James Chance, among others, not only underscores these images of post-apocalyptic landscapes and urban decay, it forms the core of Dreher and Mühlenbrock’s outstanding film: a radical approach to contemporary life profoundly influenced by punk, post-punk and new wave.

From 4 - 8 November this five-day event presents film screenings, artists’ talks and informal discussions exploring the little known yet deeply transgressive underground film scene in East Germany and West Berlin in the decade before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Curated by Claus Löser, Florian Wüst and Maxa Zoller. Supported by ifa – Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen e.V., Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur and Goethe-Institut London.

Since the beginning of the 1980s, experimental filmmaker Michael Brynntrup, one of the most significant figures of the West Berlin Super-8 scene, has produced countless films including two features, which comprise an exhaustive cinematic self-exanimation, conjuring the subject as a fictional amalgam of semiotic slippage, male/male desire and broken historical recount. "Brynntrup's production is haunted throughout by death, a theme whose origins recall the filmer's own, when he shared the womb with a stillborn twin. This early join of life and death continues to impel his relentless pursuit of cinematic invention." (Mike Hoolboom)

At Goethe-Institut, Michael Brynntrup will show and discuss a selection of his early films with curator Florian Wüst. The recently published book Who says concrete doesn't burn, have you tried? West Berlin Film in the '80s will serve as a point of reference throughout the evening.

Artists' talk and screening with live music: Cornelia Schleime, Helge Leiberg

The East German artists Cornelia Schleime and Helge Leiberg discuss the underground art scene of the 1970s and 1980s, which to a large extend has been ignored by the mainstream art world. Schleime will talk about her practice in relation to state censorship and her escape to West Berlin in the early 1980s. Leiberg will introduce the specifics of Dresden’s alternative art scene. His films will be accompanied by Lothar Fiedler’s live music. The screening will be followed by a conversation between curator and filmmaker Claus Löser and the artists.

Concrete Emotions: Personal Spaces and Urban Landscapes

Concrete Emotions depicts feelings of alienation and longing – both in East Germany and West Berlin where the violent history of the divided country presents itself inscribed in sooted ruins and post-war architecture. Domestic spaces get scrutinized while subjective views turn into political statements. The fragmentation of fictional narrative, stylised performances and documentary techniques reflect the experience of uneasiness that is turned into artistic expression.

Escape from the Real: Iron Curtains and dark fantasies

In Escape from the Real, the pathological condition of a capitalized and militarized world on one the side and the repressive atmosphere of a dying state on the other side of the Wall are met with eeriness, ecstasy and the grotesque. In East and West, experimental filmmakers were strongly inspired by punk aesthetics and music. The programme creates a sensual journey into anarchic moods and resistance against the deadlocked reality of the Cold War.
