Tyburnia
2017 Tour

Various venues and times across the UK. For more information please see this page.

For over 700 years there was a site of execution at Marble Arch in London. In the district known as Tyburnia, those who fell foul of the political, religious and judicial whims of the state were executed for public entertainment and instruction.

At our current moment of enforced austerity and social reform, Tyburnia explores the parallels between contemporary and historical notions of crime in relation to business and property, the spectacular nature of punishment, and the state's use of the body as a site for political control.

For this iteration of Tyburnia, James Holcombe will be utilising 16mm and 8mm film projectors for an expanded performance of the work featuring physical manipulation, optical distortion, and live destruction of film to create a unique performance in each location.

Dead Rat Orchestra will perform a live soundtrack featuring songs composed by or for those condemned to 'dance the Tyburn jig', bringing a new understanding to broadside ballads that have become a staple of folk music, but here presented in close association to their original context. For this tour DRO are collaborating with award winning multi-instrumentalist and singer Lisa Knapp.
